What food truck insurance costs
The lowest food-service general liability policy we have bound is $597/yr, a policy we wrote for a caterer in New York, and our lowest restaurant workers' comp policy is $509/yr. Liability and property together start at $1,153/yr on a bound businessowners policy. A food truck lands above or near those depending on cooking, alcohol, sales, payroll, property, and claims.
Food truck insurance is really two policies. The businessowners side (liability + your equipment) is cheap, about $84/mo nationally. The commercial auto policy on the truck itself is the big line, typically adding $150-$250/mo, because the truck is both your vehicle and your kitchen.
Most full-time trucks land around $300-$700/mo all-in for general liability, commercial auto, and equipment coverage. Events, commissaries, and cities will each ask for a COI naming them as additional insured, so make sure your policy includes blanket additional insureds.
| Coverage | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| General liability (bound) | from $597/yr | Our lowest bound food-service liability policy, for a caterer in New York. Cooking, alcohol, sales, and claims move it up from there. |
| Workers' compensation (bound) | from $509/yr | Our lowest bound restaurant workers' comp policy, for a sandwich shop. Priced on payroll, so staff size drives it. |
| Liability + property BOP (bound) | from $1,153/yr | Our lowest bound businessowners policy, for a full-service restaurant in New York. Building, equipment and contents values set this one. |
| General liability + equipment (BOP) | $70-$150/mo | National food truck BOP median is about $84/mo. |
| Commercial auto (the truck) | $150-$250/mo | The biggest line. Priced off the truck's value, radius, and driver records. |
| All-in typical program | $300-$700/mo | GL + auto + equipment for a full-time operating truck. |
| Workers' compensation | Priced on payroll | Required in most states once you have employees. |
These are the lowest premiums we have actually bound for restaurants, as of 2026-09-26, plus the lowest instant quotes a carrier issued ready to bind (marked "instant quote, bindable"; those are real quotes, not bound policies) and, where marked "quote", an ordinary carrier quote. Each is labelled by line of business. Your price depends on your menu, cooking, alcohol, sales, payroll, property, location, and claims. They are not an offer of insurance.
What moves your price
- ✓The truck: value, age, and whether it's owned or converted
- ✓Driver records of everyone who drives it
- ✓Operating radius and where you park overnight
- ✓Cooking method. Fryers and open flame rate higher
- ✓Generator and propane setup
- ✓Events schedule. High-volume festival trucks carry more exposure than a fixed lunch route
The coverage a food truck needs
Covers the truck as a vehicle: collision, liability on the road, and the permanently installed equipment. A personal auto policy will deny a food truck claim.
Customer illness and injury claims. Every event, market, and commissary will require it, usually at $1M/$2M with additional insured status.
Cooking equipment, generators, POS, and inventory, including while in transit.
If the truck is your only kitchen, a breakdown or fire stops all revenue. Business income coverage bridges the downtime.
Required in most states once you have employees. Priced on payroll.
Frequently asked questions
How much does food truck insurance cost?
The lowest food-service general liability policy we have bound is $597/yr, a policy we wrote for a caterer in New York, and our lowest restaurant workers' comp policy is $509/yr. Liability and property together start at $1,153/yr on a bound businessowners policy. A food truck lands above or near those depending on cooking, alcohol, sales, payroll, property, and claims.
Doesn't my personal auto policy cover my truck?
No. Personal auto policies exclude business use, and a food truck is a commercial vehicle with permanently installed cooking equipment. You need a commercial auto policy that covers the truck and the build-out.
What insurance do events and commissaries require?
Almost all require general liability, usually $1M per occurrence, with the event or commissary named as additional insured on a COI. A policy with blanket additional insured status lets us issue those COIs same-day instead of endorsing each one.
How fast can I get covered?
Liability can usually bind same-day. The commercial auto side takes a little longer because the truck, drivers, and build-out get reviewed. If you have an event deadline, tell us the date and we work backwards from it.
