Real prices by type of food business
A full-service restaurant we insure pays $1,153 a year for liability and property.
A caterer we insure pays $597 a year for general liability.
A coffee shop was quoted $686 a year for general liability. That was a quote, not a policy the owner bought.
A quick-service restaurant was quoted $1,167 a year for liability and personal property. That was also a quote.
Each line is one real business, not an average. Your price depends on your own restaurant, and we can't promise a price until we see your details.
What moves the price
Sales come first. Restaurant liability is usually rated on yearly sales, so a busier restaurant pays more.
Alcohol share of sales comes next. The more of your sales that come from alcohol, the more liquor liability costs, and a high share can change which insurers will quote.
How you cook matters. Fryers, grills, woks and open flame raise the fire risk, so they cost more to insure than a kitchen that only reheats or bakes.
Hood cleaning and fire suppression are part of that review. Insurers ask whether the hood has a suppression system and how often the hood and ducts are professionally cleaned.
Owning the building adds coverage for the building itself. If you rent, you insure your equipment, contents and the improvements you paid for, plus damage you cause to the space.
Contents value sets the property price: kitchen equipment, furniture, stock and refrigeration, valued at what they would cost to replace.
Claims in the past few years can raise the price or limit which insurers will quote.
